Heat Pump Rebates Explained

If you are struggling with the rising cost of living, you are probably looking at ways to cut back your spending. Many homeowners forget to look into their hot water systems. Did you know that electrical water heating produces nearly a quarter of your household’s emissions?

Is it possible to reduce that amount without spending a lot of money? Switching to heat pump hot water systems is not only better for the planet and the environment, but it’s also better for your wallet. The Federal and NSW governments have a range of renewable energy schemes to help everyday Australians switch to more energy-efficient hot water alternatives.

In this guide, our expert plumbers go through the different types of government rebates available in New South Wales. We will help you figure out which rebate suits you best and how much money overall you can save now and in the future.

The Federal Heat Pump Rebates

Small-Scale Renewable Energy Scheme

The federal government’s Small Scale Renewable Energy Scheme started in 2011 and is a part of the Renewable Energy Target (RET). This incentive is available to individuals and small businesses around Australia and works by generating certificates called Small-Scale Technology Certificates (STCs). STCs are based on how much electricity a particular product produces for example, a heat pump or solar panel system.

The amount of STCs you receive depends on how much energy your product produces, your location and the model of heat pump you have installed. The STC scheme is designed to reduce over time and will be over by the time 2030 rolls around. This means the longer you wait to install your new heat pump or upgrade your electric setup, the lower your rebate will be.

NSW Heat Pump Incentives

Energy Saving Scheme (ESS)

The New South Wales Energy Saving Scheme (ESS) is responsible for all of the heat pump rebates in the state. It was designed as an easy way for everyday households to reduce their energy consumption and greenhouse gas emissions. It’s available for homes that already have an existing gas or electric hot water system and offers generous rebates if you switch to a heat pump system.

This rebate is designed to help cut down on the upfront installation cost.

If you’re eligible, installation discounts can range between:

  • $400 and $670 if you are replacing an electric water heater with an air source heat pump water heater
  • $190 and $310 when you replace a gas water heater with an air source heat pump water heater.

How To Maximise Your Savings

The amount you save through using these schemes will depend on your location, make and model of heat pump and how energy efficient it is.

When installing a new heat pump system, it’s important to use only certified and accredited plumbers and technicians. GRH Plumbing’s team are fully trained in all aspects of the Federal and NSW heat pump rebate schemes. They will make sure that it is installed correctly, with all the proper insulations and wiring checked and ready to go.
